Bangkok Burn Gritty hardboiled noir crime fiction about a Bangkok mafia family Bangkok Series Book 1 edition by Simon Royle Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Royle’s knowledge of Southeast Asia make you feel like you’re there, and his character development as well as the plot and action keeps your interest up right thru the ending. VERY gritty, but that lends to the realism. Reminds me a little of the Sons of Anarchy for the family ties and intrigue. Well done Simon!
This book earns its chorus of 5-star reviews. It's a fast-paced, well-plotted story with vivid characters and events, all factors to draw readers in from the beginning, hit them with the force of a muay Thai kick, and at the end leave them hungry for sequels. The book provides a not-unrealistic representation of Thai culture, including its distinctive relationships between order and chaos, respect for law and endemic corruption, close and gentle family ties and violence. My only suggestion work in explanations or defiitions of some of the Thai terms appropriately used in the book. This would give those farangs unfamiliar with the culture the same vivid understanding of the book's local color and events that those of us who live or often visit there are privileged to enjoy. More stories, please!
It's not quite Chandler or Cain, but it's good. The Bangkok setting works right. The only thing that could make this even better is some of those pithy insightful details that tell so much about a character. In this one, the protagonist is clearly drawn, but the rest of the characters don't quite have that edge.
Set in Thailand, this thriller gives us an insight into life behind the scenes in this tourist-friendly country. It's certainly not a scenario you would want to step into by mistake but it's utterly fascinating.

Corruption and greed, gangsters and villains, all balanced with family values and loyalties. The characters are tough, both males and females, and the action is fast and furious.

The use of Thai idioms and honorifics was confusing at first but I soon got used to them. None of the dictionaries on my speak Thai so a short glossary of terms at the beginning of the book would have helped the initial confusion.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it has a freshness that many traditionally published books lack these days. It was very well-written in a style that suited the story and its location. I'll be looking out for more great reads from Simon Royle.
I don't usually have high hopes for cheap or free reads, but I do have an impressive TBR pile that shrinks each time I stop reading a story. Bangkok Burns is a rarity in that the voice held me despite some really aggravating "jarring" moments. I started reading it yesterday, put it down...and picked it up again! I enjoyed the setting, the family dynamics, the unapologetic approach and the well-thought out way Royle depicted the ultra-rich and Asian society.

My only nitpicks

It's in first person, and in the beginning, Royle talks directly to the reader through the use of the word "You" (as in "you" don't understand). It threw me off, since most people who use first person, while talking to the reader, aren't "literally" talking to the reader. I'm glad it stopped about ten pages in.

The action goes by so fast and everyone has so many names (understandable) that I had to stop and back it up a couple of times to figure out what was going on.

My faves

Thank God, this is an author who knows how to use technology. I can't stand thrillers where the hero "doesn't" own a cell phone and can't figure out GPS.
Strong women. It takes a secure man to write women who are more than toys and underdeveloped characters.

Nice job. Royle has gone on my "to-buy" list.
This is a Mystery/Thriller

Chance, the adopted son of a Thai Godfather, investigates a series of events that begin when a bomb goes off putting him and his father in the hospital. As if that wasn't enough, the city itself is divided, riots break out, and eventually things get burned.

I love how Mr. Royle weaves in Chance's thoughts, the cultural differences, the historic background, and the love of family. I also love the plot twists and turns.

Warning This book is for Mature Audiences due to Graphic Violence, Sexual Situations, Adult Language, and 'Drug' use.
Just wow. I like noir, hard boiled mysteries. This is totally something of another species. I couldn't put it down once I got started. Usually stories about jetsetting, unimaginable wealth, and excess turn me off. This pulled me into the life without my consent. Meet Chance, a white boy in a world of Thai. Dek Farang is his name, Foreigner Kid in English. He is Chance!
"Could not put it down..." I see that a lot, typically I pass on by because if the book was that good, seems like the reviewer could be a little more odiginal. Bangkok Burn has changed my mind on that. I could put it down, even walk away, but then I was right back to it. This book had everything I want in a book. ..recurring characters, lots of quality kills, a great anti-hero, interesting suppirting characters, and a sense of humor. The book (and series I'm guessing) is set in Thailand, with action going on everywhere from a powerful Thai crime family, Yakuza, Cambodians, political rebels, the Police, the Mi!itary, and some I have surely left out. The author presents a 1st person account from the main character, an American adopted into and raised by a Thai criminal couple that over time become a powerful "empire" involved deep!y in everything...crooked and straight. I'm not telling you the story, it's odd to read a book where you are rooting for the criminals who are up against other criminals. The government, police, and military are all corrupt, some in the pocket of the Thai Family, others in it purely on and for their own. Get this book, it is a great read, and I will readily admit, is almost impossible to put down.
