Amazon sent me an email mentioning this story was on sale for 99 cents. I decided to "peek inside" to see what writer could be so special that one lousy short story got it's own book cover. I read a few pages and tentacles from the story shot out and penetrated my brain forcing me to order the story on the spot and then sit down to read it. Joe says this was the story that "put him on the map" in the publishing world, so to speak, back in 1986. It's written as a fevered dream, a vivid anti-nuclear proliferation tale that normally would turn me off if it got too preachy, but never crossed the line. It's from the wildest, out-there reaches of man's imagination while adhering strictly and perfectly to rules of structure, timing. world-creation and characterization.

Joe Lansdale, how come he's so hot? Because not only does he have LED-bright talent, he's got mastery of craft to go with it. The story may be 28 years old but it stands with the best writing of today.

Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man Back Joe R Landsdale 9781561465460 Books Reviews

This is perhaps my favorite Joe Landsdale tale. I purchased the kindle digital version first, and liked it so much, I decided to buy the hardcopy as well. As a previous reader states, it is a very dark short story, and as such, the characters are not complexly developed, but I think they are adequately developed to thoroughly enjoy this story. If you like dark and sad tales about remorse and regret, you should enjoy this story a lot. I agree, however, that this story is probably not for everyone, given its dark and bleak content.
Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man’s Back by Joe R. Lansdale is a very morbid short story told by the main character’s journal which he refers to in his writings as Mr. Journal. The journal writer and his wife are alone trying to survive in a lighthouse in a post-apocalyptic world after a nuclear holocaust. His wife hates him because she blames him for the death of their daughter. Lansdale describes their painful existence in his usual detailed and ruthless manner. This story won a Bram Stoker award and I highly recommend it.
The bomb has dropped. The survivors are wracked with guilt, and find their feelings expressing themselves in truly disturbing ways. And then there are the roses...

Joe Lansdale, one of the hardest working and most underrated authors today, turns out a knockout story with "Tight Little Stitches". I'm going to warn you this one is pretty high-octane nightmare fuel. But where else can you find a story that's part character study, part horror tale, part post-apocalyptic novel, and part psychological thriller? And all of that in a very short time?

If you like this one, go check out Incident On and Off a Mountain Road, another story from the master. You won't be sorry.
I stumbled on this story by accident, and I may have never heard of it, had a friend of mine not informed me the author had several short stories available on for .

The story my friend told me to read was INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD, which I read first, and thoroughly enjoyed. It was very good, so I decided to see how well rounded an author Mr. Lansdale was, and picked this one next, mainly due to the seemingly ambiguous title.

Fifteen minutes later, I was a Lansdale fan for life!

I truly didn't know what to expect when I started reading this masterpiece, but if I would have had any expectations, suffice it to say they would have been dashed apart over and over again, as this story just continued to surprise and astonish me.

I love it, and if you are not squeamish, you will too. Staggeringly twisted, brilliantly written. One of my new all time favorites. Read it, you won't regret it!
This has been a favorite story of mine, even to the title. It's a novella length tale of the end of the world as we know it. There isn't much one can say without spoiling it all, except that the main character is responsible (or is he?) for the holocaust and his punishment is severe.

Lansdale is a consummate story teller in any genre he chooses, and there are many. His prose is gritty, unbending, and will curl your toes if you aren't prepared for it.
I thought there wasn't much out there that could gross me out, but Lansdale managed it. There's a lot between the lines in this short story, and a whole lot spelled out in nice clear inky letters and lines (on the main character's back). Lansdale has the kind of hard-hitting no holds-barred imagination that take you on a super-vivid ride through Dystopia Land.

The dissolution of a mind is a common trope in horror and dystopic SF, and the way Lansdale writes it is mesmerizing. You feel sorry the main character & his wife and their overwhelming guilt (overridden by their overwhelming need to survive).

Reading Lansdale is like eating Chili made with Carolina Reaper chilies and feeling the burn as it moves through your gut. And this is just a short story!
"Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man's Back" is a short story about Paul and Mary Marder - and, distantly, their daughter, Rae.

Paul was part of THE CREW that helped bring about nuclear devastation to the Earth. He and his wife, Mary, barely make it into extensive underground shelters and are "safe." Their daughter is not so lucky.

Paul lives with his overwhelming guilt of what he has helped do to the world and their daughter, and Mary never lets him forget it. She refuses to talk to him and every night deeply tattoos a picture of their daughter on his back. He looks forward to the nightly cleansing pain.

After twenty years some of the survivors, including Paul and Mary, decide to go topside. And then the story really gets strange.

Joe Lansdale is one of my favorite authors and is a master of the short story. Lansdale considers this little post-apocalyptic gem to be one of his favorites. I can certainly understand why. Oh, and Freud would have had a great time analyzing Joe after he read THIS story!
