What a great reprint of a fine old English mystery writer! Yes, you can detect that it is dated, but it's so well written that it doesn't stop a reader from getting really involved with the story. And how nice that the police, lawyers, and private individuals are willing to work together for the greater good. And fine, sharp Aunt Penkridge is the one to solve the mystery, although you have to wait until the end for her to put all the clues together. So-o-o many twists and turns. I just loved this book and want to read more by J. S. Fletcher.

The Middle of Things J S Fletcher 9781117544243 Books Reviews

The printing is so small it is hard for me to read. So I haven't read this one yet but am sure I will like it. Might buy again from Resurrected Press and donate the small print one to the library.
its a murder mystery where a friend is arrested for a murder and having to prove this friends innocence puts him in the middle of the investigation. loved it. i love all this persons books cant wait to read more of their books
I only gave this 3 stars because it was hard to follow the storyline. There were too many characters and it dragged on and on. I usually enjoy British mysteries but this one of murder, conspiracy and a title left me wanting the story to end.
This is not a Dr. Thorndyke story. However, it is still an excellent mystery. J.S. Fletcher is one of my favorite authors of this time period. The early 1920's in England was a great setting for this type of story.
The set up was very well written to draw the reader in to the clues that were found at the murder scene. Each new character brought a sense of involvement. The detective who solves the situation was quite believable.
...What she loved was a story which began with crime and ended with a detection." Fine British Police Procedural that made for a quick read. First J. S. Fletcher book I come across but won't be my last! And should you miss out grabbing this title on the house then not to worry, consider these other collections that include the same story plus several other quality classic mysteries for less than a dollar

Smart detective stories that make for an entertaining read!
Not bad for a rainy afternoon. Fletcher is by no means a distinguished writer of the 'Golden Age' as stated, neither distinguished (alhough prolific) nor even Golden Age by either chronology (he is in fact an almost exact contemporary of Conan Doyle) or by style his writing methods don't adhere to the closed forms and strict rules professed (if not not always observed) by Golden Age writers. This particular book suffers from an immense amount of repetition whereby the characters keep explaining the plot to each other, and then generally come to an amazing cliff-hanger conclusion at the end of the chapter that you had already deduced many pages ago, but the story is a good one, and interesting, and the characters and locale reasonably well-drawn.
