Unlaced by the Outlaw Secrets in Silk Michelle Willingham 9781477826010 Books Reviews

Loved Margaret and Cain's story. Cain is a highland outlaw and his devotion to Margaret through-out the years is what love stories are about and Margaret's ambitions to wed a titled man makes for a great adventure. Then send them on an unchaperoned adventure through the wild and you get one great love story. Mix in the side story of Cain's little brother Jonah's trouble and the reawakening of Margaret's parents "Beatrice and Henry" love for each other. Another great book by Michelle

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review
Gentle Margaret, the oldest of the Andrew's sisters, saw herself as destined to be a spinster all of her days. Little did she know that her commoner friend, Cain, has always been in love with her and always will be. Despite everything he stays steady and true to the one woman he's known for a life time and the one he'd move heaven and earth to posse.
It was a good ending to the series to have Margaret finally accept that she didn't have to face life alone and that love was waiting if she'd just unbend her stiff society rules!
Cain Sinclair and Margaret Andrews couldn't have been more opposite. He a highlander and she a member of the ton with an over developed sense of propriety, became acquainted when the Andrew sister's opened a business in secret called Aphrodite's Unmentionables. He was a currier from the country to England to deliver the "unmentionables" to the merchants. Over time they became friends and when tragedy stuck Margaret knew the only that could help her was Cain. That's where their true journey begins. A great series by Michele Willingham. Great read for adults.
This was a great Book!
i could not stop reading it! it was so much different, than all my other books about Highlanders! In the 1800's! Margaret Andrews a High Society spinster! Tries to save her younger sister who runs off with a man who jilted Margaret only a month before! Then she
hires a handsome Highlander .Mr Sinclair who has loved and adored Margaret since they first met at 17 years old, he was very poor with a young brother and she was very wealthy and always dreamed of marrying a Duke or a man with a high Title! it's a long story and it makes you hold your breath wanting to know what will happen next! However you don't want it too end either! it will take a long time before i can find a book that good! Thanks to Michelle Willingham for this wonderful book! Take my word, You will love it! if you don;t -------Your dead!
This is the fourth and final book in the Secrets in Silk Series. While it's predominantly the story of Margaret Andrews, the 25-year old unmarried second Andrews sister, it pulls in a lot of details from the other three books. It ties some loose ends, and even gives us a pleasant surprise in the epilogue.
Margaret is the straight-laced daughter (as in "unlaced"), the good daughter, who always obeyed all the rules, sought to please her parents, and complied with British societal mores. She gets caught up in an attempt to save her sister, Amelia, who was drugged and kidnapped by an English Lord. (Amelia's story is book 3.) However, Margaret is involved in a serious accident while searching for her sister. Book 4 tells the story of her accident, recovery, and return to her parents' home in Scotland.
This is another good book in the series. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Given Margaret's personality (even though I knew the book would have some spicy parts) I thought it would be a good story to sum up the series while telling her story. Although it was all that, it had a story all its own that was full of action and intrigue. I liked it!
Margaret has always been the "proper, prim, and obedient" of the four Andrews sisters. She was the one the family always knew would marry a wealthy, titled, man of the ton. Her three younger sisters had all "accidentally" married the ideal husband and now that Margaret was in her mid twenty's she had to find the perfect husband as soon as possible. Her chances were limited by a scandal a few years earlier in which a rogue had dropped his suit a few days before the wedding and admitted it had all been part of a wager with his friends. Since then almost no man had expressed any interest in her at all.

In the "Secrets in Silk" series all the stories overlap at least a little bit and each tells of events from the other character's perspective. In the previous book the youngest sister, Amelia, had been kidnapped by the same rogue who had pretended to want to marry Margaret, and he had taken Amelia away from a party where Margaret was supposed to be keeping an eye on her. Margaret felt it was her fault that he had been able to do this because she hadn't kept an eye on Amelia every moment of the evening. She was determined to do everything she could to rescue her sister. She had one friend take the main road to Scotland where the rogue was taking Amelia to make her marry him, and she and her friend Cain Sinclair were going to take the back roads because Cain knew all the ways between Scotland and London and could find them if they had taken anything other than the main road. We know from the previous book that Amelia was found safely but Margaret had been missing for a month. In this book, we find out what Margaret had been doing all that time.

Cain Sinclair was a poor Highland Scot who had been in love with Margaret for years. He had even asked her to marry him twice but she turned him down because it would disappoint her parents if she married beneath her, and she had always been taught her role in life was to be a wife to a nobleman. When her sisters had started raising money to help pay the bills while their father was away being a soldier in the Peninsula, they hired Cain to be their representative in London. They made and sold lacy ladies' undergarments but knew if they were found out it would cause a scandal because ladies of their class did not have jobs. Cain would pick up new supplies in London and deliver the finished garments to one fashionable store where the garments sold for hundreds of dollars. It had fed the family until their father had finally returned and could take over the estates and turn them around financially, and they were able to pay the local Scots women to help with the sewing.

Margaret doesn't plan ahead very well when Amelia disappears and thinks they will find her in an hour or so and all would be well. It doesn't turn out that way and they end up traveling for most of the night with no sight of her. Cain tried to talk her out of this but she is too stubborn and is determined to find her sister. The road is so bad and they are jostled around so much the coach finally tips over and rolls down a hill. The oil lantern spills and sets it on fire. The fire kills their driver and they have to fight to get out of the burning coach. When they finally get out there is only one horse they can catch and Cain is badly burned. They have to walk or ride the one horse slowly to find help. That is why it takes them a month to get home.

You can imagine how Margaret's feelings might change after spending a month alone with Cain, sharing beds with him, sleeping in barns, and huddling together to keep warm in the rain. She learns that he has his own kind of nobility and realizes that wealth and a title don't make a man kind or loving. They run into all kinds of challenges on their way and a new villain is introduced. There is a side story involving Cain's 14-year-old brother who stands trial for a murder he didn't commit.

IMHO the story bogged down in the middle. I got a little tired of hearing how much Cain loved her, and Margaret's repeated explanations about being proper. Poor Cain had Margaret sitting on his lap while they rode the horse for days and her bouncing around was very painful for him. And, he repeatedly told her about it. Maybe she didn't sit behind him because his back was burned? Or maybe he just liked having her bounce in his lap and complaining about it. There was lots of talking about sex, and then there was lots of doing sex. Way too much!!! I started skipping the sex scenes because there just wasn't much more the author could find to say about it and I was afraid it was getting a little weird.

The other annoying thing was the flashbacks. I don't mind a prelude that gives meaning to a story, but the frequent flashbacks really broke the flow of the story. I suppose if I hadn't just read the previous 3 books it might be information that was needed to understand what was happening but it was not new information to me. Each of the books could be a stand-alone story because some of the same subjects are covered from different perspectives and the repeated parts are written in an interesting way so it doesn't usually feel repetitive. But Margaret resisting Cain's love had been covered pretty much in previous books so that did get old to me. I'm a peeker, so when a book bogs down I look at the end and if it is good I'll keep reading. I confess, I peeked ahead to the ending and it was so great I could be patient and read through the slow parts to get there. So the good ending saved the book as far as I am concerned.
