Gods ghosts and black dogs The fascinating folklore and mythology of dogs Stanley Coren 9781845848606 Books Reviews
I was expecting a thorough examination of the mythology of canines, but this book was more a personal book of stories I find difficult to believe are now or were ever widely popular. It is a simi-interesting inspection of the human physiology relating to canines, but alas even this interest is tainted by my disbelief of the stories provides.
Good book
It's really a fascinating collection of stories that give insight to how different cultures around the world look at dogs. This is a great collection of the author's favorite folk tales and mythology on dogs. Egyptians and Chinese cultures had high regard for their dogs. The Egyptian God Anubis has a dog's head (if you didn't know). You'll learn stories from Native American tribes, Canadians, and countries in Europe. So many interesting stories. There are also fun folklore stories like "How the Dalmation Got its spots" or "Why dogs sniff other dogs' behinds." There were also great illustrations. The only thing that was challenging about reading the book was the 9 or 10 point type (if it gets republished, I suggest the publisher make the font a bit larger). - Again, it's a wonderful collection of stories from different cultures - and gives the reader a good taste of how dogs have been perceived around the world. Great stories for dog parents! You'll always remember some of these stories and that's the mark of a good book.
I purchased this book for myself, but my son (10 years old) enjoyed reading it so much that I haven't had a chance.
I usually love Stanley Coren but there were so many typos in this that I couldn't even finish it. I was very excited to order it because of hearing that black dogs are often the last to be picked at shelters - like black cats - and some of that is bc of superstitions. Therefore, very disappointed.
