Laney Books
3.5 starsA realistic, unique vampire story with romance, and action, Laney is the first book in what I think will be a good vampire series. Laney has a good, solid story line that's fun, and enjoyable. I felt that both the main and secondary characters were developed nicely. I liked that while they're all in college, they're written in a way that older YA readers will be able to relate to them. Laney herself was someone I at times had a hard time connecting with, and other times I found her relatable. There's of course a hot vampire who enters the picture and totally shakes up Laney's quiet college life. Oliver is definitely a knight in shining armor. He and Laney have insta-chemistry, and I liked how their relationship develops through out the story. The story is written in a way that makes me think that both the romance and the intriguing vampire mythology are going to continue to develop and get better as the series goes on.
Laney for me was a good read. I really wanted to like it more than I did, but I there's a few things that kept me from falling in love with it. I felt the story was overly descriptive at times like with the little details on what characters are doing, and what they're wearing, which took too much attention away from the story for me. The pacing started off a little slow for me, and it took until around 100 pages for me to really get into the story. The second half of the book however is full of action, and twists, and I liked how the story ended. I love this cover and I think it's a perfect match for the book. I feel like Joann has done a good job at setting up the rest of her Brookehaven Vampire series with Laney, and I'm really looking forward to reading the more of Laney's story.

Laney Books Reviews
Overall Rating 4.25 Rockin’ Stars
A little while back, it was suggested by some of our followers that we needed to read Laney (Brookehaven Vampires #1) by Joann I. Martin Sowles. I was intrigued because this was the first I'd heard of the series. Well, I'm hooked! This book captured me at the beginning and I couldn't put it down until I was finished and that's saying a lot because it's not a short story! It doesn't have a happily ever after ending because the next book continues the saga. This is Laney and Oliver's story and it's action-packed!
Laney Alexander is a junior in college and she lives with her best friend Kierra Blake. Their first day of school is a doozy! Kierra ends up passing out in class and Mr. McHottie helps get her to the school nurse. Laney is drawn to Oliver Knight and it’s very difficult for her to focus when he's around. She's been raised by her aunt after her mother died when she was only two. Her father isn't in the picture and we aren't really told where he is. Oliver Knight is an enigma, and he seems to read Laney like a book. He knows when she stares at him in class and when she's happy or sad. He slowly begins to insert himself into her daily life. The chemistry between Laney and Oliver sizzles. They are different in every way, yet fit together like two pieces of a puzzle.
This story is fast paced and you are left hanging at the end. There are so many twists and turns that you are not sure if you are up or down and your emotions reflect it also. The characters are complex and layered. They are not easy to figure out at all and when you finally believe you have, something new begins and you are right at the beginning again. This is a fabulously written book and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
I’m a bit mixed on this story… I found the story engaging and the character likable but at the same time there are some plot holes that really caused confusion. The big battle at the end was one of those, while the primary bad guys stake in things is known it was very unknown why all these others people were causing havoc and mayhem, it seems very out of the blue. Some of the things characters did seem forced to cause extra drama and tension, one of those instances was Laney’s break down, it was just out of place and out of character. There was also a ton of angst and the characters were pretty immature, we repeat things like he's gorgeous and cute smile way to much. Since one of the characters is supposed to be 35 it was really out of place....
While I did enjoy reading this book I do not think I’m going to read the others. The story is not finished but it’s been 3 years since the last book so I think I will stop here.
A book full of young people finding their way, becoming the people their going to be. Full of young men, women and the super natural falling in love for the first time, learning what they can and cannot except. Being pushed to their limits, yet somehow finding the strength to keep going, fighting for each other, having each other's backs.
The characters in this book are awesome, well rounded, true to themselves and each other, brave, likeable, real and relatable. I was wonderfully excited while reading this book, not able too read fast enough, loving everything that was happening, while totally mesmerized by the story. It caught my attention quickly and I was a goner to this story, with characters that were enchanting, so innocent, yet others with blackened heart's.
I know this is a series that I'm going to love, down to my core. It's very exciting, some characters have their secrets, some are running for their lives, falling in love. It's one of those books I'll always remember the story, while many books I read even enjoy, but I don't always remember there story. This one I definitely will. Excellent writing, awesome characters, leaving the reader wanting more. Luckily there's more, much more so off I go to read the next book with baited breath, I can't wait to start it. I highly recommend this book.
