I needed a book on good sportsmanship that emphasized learning to cope with the emotional aspects of participating in competitive sports, especially when losing and this book was perfect! The story is perfect for late preschool/early elementary aged kids. It shows Mia dealing with disappointment by quitting and the reactions of her teammates without being scary or overwhelming or preachy so that kids can stick with the story. It is very well written, Mia discovers that she "loves soccer more than she hates losing" and when she kicks the ball down the field it stays with her like a "friend". It is a nice touch that the book does not tell whether her final kick scores or not, it really brings home the point that playing is more important than winning or losing. The illustrations are cute and capture the motion and emotion of the story perfectly. Additionally, the book includes inspirational information about Mia's sensational soccer career. She is a fantastic role model and my son really related well to her story.

Winners Never Quit! Mia Hamm Carol Thompson 9780439849302 Books Reviews

Bought this book to read with my 4 year old. It has a great message and my child enjoys it. It's a pretty quick read, which is appropriate for the audience for which it is intended.
Nicely written story which encourages kids to keep trying, and no one always wins.
My 6 year old daughter liked having a book written by Mia Hamm, but truthfully, the story wasn't all that impressive to me. My daughter doesn't struggle w/poor sportsmanship though. Nothing particularly special about this book, but if you are having issues w/sportsmanship, it would probably be a decent conversation-starter.
Very good children's book about sportsmanship. Our kid doesn't know who Mia Hamm is yet, or even understand the story, but he looks at the nice artwork and chews on the pages a little. There's definitely a spark of interest that should last through the time he can understand the book.
The story is a favorite in our house. It's got cute pictures and a great message about being a good sport. When Mia quits she is made to sit out the next time and she realizes that it's more fun to play then to get upset about the game. It's nice that you don't know if she makes a goal at the end because it doesn't really matter if she does. What matters is that she's being a good sport.

My only remotely negative comment is minor - they use the word hate. It's not a big deal but we're working on having the kids NOT use that word so it turns into a "ummmm...she said hate..." Not a big deal at all and a good opportunity to show an appropriate way to use the word but it's there nonetheless.
My daughter loves this book. My husband is a soccer coach so we love all things soccer in our house. The book has a great message about sportsmanship and never giving up. It also features pictures of Mia Hamm and includes a signed photo of her.
Mia Hamm's personal story about learning how to be a team player and what sportsmanship is all about- she tells a story of her days with her brothers and sisters competing in backyard soccer games and how she had to learn that she can't win every time but that doesn't mean its time to quit. Its short and to the point with fairly good illustrations. I would recommend it especially for the price delivered quickly as usual wit Prime.
