Great fun! This is a rare, perhaps unprecedented mixture of sports, murder and Southern California. Frankly, the latter two are of greater interest to me and I was not disappointed. The characters were well drawn; the plot was intricate but believable. The observations of L.A. were dead-on and fraught with wry humor. One thing that I hate about some mysteries is that it is impossible for the reader to have a chance to figure out who did it. Frequently a lot of previously unknown information is revealed at the last minute. That was not true with this book. There were enough clues that would permit the alert reader a chance to come up with a plausible analysis. Post Pattern Burnside Series Book 1 edition by David Chill Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Burnside originally has two cases - one case is for fraud and the other for Norman
Freeman, who wants to know who is trying to kill him or Robbie, his brother. Then at
his bachelor party, his brother Robbie ends up dead! Most of the family believes that
it's an accident and wants to move on, but not the father, Harrison Freeman, who
knows in his gut that someone killed Robbie. Burnside knows too because he hasn't
let the case go. As he digs deep into Robbie's life, he discovers secrets and one
brick wall after another when he tries to find out about Robbie. Why are people
trying to dissuade him from this case? Will he find Robbie's killer before he too
ends up dead? He solves Robbie's murder and ties up his other case as well.
Worth a read! Contains a preview of second book in series - Fate Route

It should read you're a liar, not your a liar.
This was a wonderful mystery!! I love the main character, Burnside!!! He’s quite a character and you can’t help but love him! The whole mystery is very lifelike and intriguing. I have to admit the ending was a surprise and I loved it!! I’m off to read Book 2!!! I’ve found another great author!!
I do like this series. I like Burnside. Even though he is a smart mouth, he is basically a good guy. He is honest and really does care about his clients. I won't repeat all the descriptions of the book. That has been done. It does have some minor sex scenes in it at the bachelor party, but not graphic or sordid. This was a good mystery and kept me guessing until close to the end. I had a hunch about the murderer about half way through the book, but was still surprised about the details. I did notice some editing errors. If you like light mysteries, this is for you. I would recommend this book and this series.
Chill’s main character, Burnside – if he gives him a first name, I don’t recall seeing it – an ex-college football star, ex-LAPD officer PI in LA is asked by family members to uncover who killed their son and brother after the police write his death off as an accident.
Burnside, who lost his police career after a bad judgment call, is a bit cynical about the world at large but hasn’t lost his concern for people and the toll their decisions cost them. That elevates him a touch above the usual hard-boiled PI.
Burnside’s connections within the college football community let him walk through doors others would find locked and guarded.
Chill keeps Burnside realistic in that after suffering a beating, he doesn’t shake it off in a few hours. He hurts for days as a real person would.
Chill kept me guessing right up to the end who the guilty party was in this well-told tale.
I’ll add David Chill to my ‘To Read’ list, hoping future efforts are as good as this one.
David Chill has written a short, entertaining, yet totally unoriginal, private eye novel that adopts all the genre's clichés and comes across as a slick episode of an old-time TV series like Mannix.
The hero, Burnside, is a fortyish ex-college football player, ex-cop turned PI who is hired to investigate the mysterious death of a recently graduated player at a fictionalized version of UCLA. The dead man fell or was thrown out a high-rise apartment building during his brother's bachelor party. Suspects include a number of his ex-teammates, as well as the strippers and hangers on who were at the party.
Although it's a short book that actually succeeds fairly well at disguising the identity of the killer, Chill trots out a whole bunch of predictable plot twists, including numerous (albeit entertaining) asides about Los Angeles and college football, a car chase, a new girlfriend, and about five fist fights. Chill doesn't break any new ground here, but he writes well and knows how to construct a plot. As a result, the book moves quickly and is never boring. It's a good way for fans of the hardboiled genre to spend a long night or a short weekend.
I thoroughly enjoyed Post Patten. The characters are interesting and believable. I am from Santa Monica so it was great fun knowing all the places where the story takes place Santa Monica, a dive bar in Venice Beach, Malibu, Westwood, downtown LA and out in the "hood" - Crenshaw. LA in summer is well depicted. Normally it's fairly easy to figure out "who done it" but in this case, I was surprised! The author builds the suspense to a thrilling reveal. I enjoyed the "play" between the detective and the LA police and the mix of low and high society. I highly recommend the book and look forward to the next Burnside mystery.
